Media people talk about the CBA "Fifth Quarter": What is this? Superfluous&&; No matter how sharp the point of view is, I won t write it down
On October 31, according to a report by media person @iquanzhangzhangzhao, the CBA will change the 12-minute quarter to 10 minutes in the new season. Sports media personality Fu Zhenghao MVP issued a long article talking about this change in the new CBA season. The full text is as follows: The Chinese Basketball Association not only wants to change the CBA competition format to a single 10-minute quarter, but also intends to imitate the New Zealand Basketball League's Rapidleague format and add a 10-minute "fifth quarter" after each game to train young players who have little regular time playing time. As far as I know, the New Zealand Basketball League launches Rapidleague before each game, aiming to achieve both the desired and desired effects. It can not only enrich the content of the game, but also allow young players to get dedicated training time. It can also save venue, broadcast and other event resources, so that sponsors and fans can have a sense of value-for-money returns without increasing the price. Most basketball leagues in the world now follow FIBA's 4 quarters of 10 minutes each. Only a few leagues such as the NBA and CBA use the 4 quarters of 12 minutes each. Starting in 2023, the then Chinese men's basketball coach Djordjevic proposed that CBA should fully integrate with FIBA rules. CBA games are long but not intense enough, and it is difficult to quickly get into rhythm in FIBA games. After losing in the World Cup, a CBA club general manager called me and gave me some suggestions for Chinese basketball. The first one was to suggest that the CBA competition system should be fully integrated with FIBA and the game length should be shortened to 40 minutes. The boss firmly believes that if CBA games are condensed to 40 minutes, the intensity of CBA games will definitely be stronger than now, and the players will be more focused on the game. The primary mission of the new leadership team of the Chinese Basketball Association is to bring the Chinese men’s basketball team back to the Olympics, so they must strengthen the management of the CBA and make the CBA the baton and important starting point for guiding the cultivation of Chinese basketball talents. Whether it is activating NBL or naturalized players, or boosting the enthusiasm of CBA youth team talent cultivation, CBA must be used as the baton. In the past two years, there has been discussion about the CBA shortening the game format from 12 minutes to 10 minutes in a single quarter. Some people in the Basketball Association have also taken the opportunity to talk to the outside world and test the outside world's opinions. The CBA Club Cup has taken the lead in changing to a 10-minute game system. Although the CBA has been shortened back to 20 minutes in a single quarter, although there are different opinions from all parties, at least the wind has continued to blow in the early stage, and there are psychological expectations. If it is possible to change a single quarter to 10 minutes and the CBA must be in line with FIBA rules, then what does it mean to have a fifth quarter after four quarters of a CBA game? Someone from the Basketball Association told me yesterday that this is following the example of the New Zealand Basketball League. Since the New Zealand Basketball League launched the Rapidleague in 2023, the skills of young New Zealand players have improved by leaps and bounds. In 2024, the New Zealand U17 men's basketball team achieved fourth place in the FIBA U17 World Cup, and 11 of the 12 players on the team have played in the Rapidleague. In the past two days, some CBA clubs have received this news one after another. I asked several general managers, and everyone was dumbfounded by this innovation in the fifth quarter. They said that no official notification has been received yet, at least there is no official announcement, but someone has indeed come to complain, and the implication is that this matter has been decided by the Basketball Association, and CBA clubs must learn to accept it. But everyone still disagrees with this. First of all, New Zealand is not a strong basketball country. Their Rapidleague has just begun to innovate the competition system, and the effect is currently unclear. As for New Zealand's fourth place in the U17 World Cup, it is more because it has caught up with a good young talent. No one can say how much it has to do with Rapidleague. After all, there is no scientific quantitative standard. Secondly, the CBA League has its own CBADL competition that specializes in training young players, specifically allowing those young players who cannot play the ball to play in the game. There is no need to add a "fifth quarter" to the CBA game. As for the second and final point, it is too sharp for me to write out. The CBA has been reformed for so many years, and I have long been a Buddhist. In fact, I have tried all CBA competition systems (home and away games, tournament system, eight foreign players in four quarters, 20 minutes each half). Therefore, I no longer have much freshness. I feel that the performance of the national team has little to do with the CBA competition system. The Basketball Association has a good starting point for innovating the competition system for the CBA, but when making any decision, it is best to conduct full research, scientific evaluation, and listen to opinions before making a decision. After all, the CBA has nominally separated management and management.
