West has played for the Lakers for 14 years in his career, averaging 27.0 points, 5.8 rebounds and 6.7 assists per game. On August 8, 1974 (local time), West announced his retirement from the Lakers, ending his brilliant basketball career.

After retiring, West served as the Lakers head coach and general manager of several teams, and was successfully selected as the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and the 75-star in NBA history. On June 12, 2024 (local time), West died at the age of 86.
