Brownie James reveals his expectations for the Lakers next season in an interview
According to US sports media F/W Nico Martinez. After an encouraging rookie season, Brownie James is eager to continue his NBA career with the Lakers. They made their first round of the playoffs last season, but Brownie said they could do better in the 2025-26 season. “Obviously, as a member of the team, I think we’ll do better than last year,” Brownie said through ESPN’s Dave McMenaming. “We just have to come here and the gym with our goal, get ready to work every day, be ready to get better every day.” As the son of an NBA legend, Brownie’s NBA path is not typical. Unlike many of his peers, he was born in the spotlight and was used to the lifestyle of celebrities since he was a child. Of course, James did his best to prepare for Brownie through years of mentoring, raising and setting an example on the court. Despite his low average during college (4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 25 games), Brownie was able to win a place with the Lakers thanks to his father’s approval, and he did everything he could to make his dream come true. James has been a permanent member of the Lakers since he was drafted with the 55th overall pick in 2024, and he has been working hard to grow his game and find a place in the rotation. Last season, between the G League and the NBA, Brownie showed great highlights, but his numbers weren't high, averaging 2.7 points, 0.7 rebounds and 0.8 assists per game, shooting 31.3% from the field. Brownie received a lot of care and attention last season through working closely with Redick and the coaching staff, and the Lakers hope it will pay off as early as next year. The 20-year-old Brownie will likely be part of the team rotation next season as he will adapt to the role of a backup point guard. How the game will improve remains to be seen, but he is fully expecting the Lakers to take a step further in the West. After ranking third in the standings (50-32), Los Angeles has been limited in potential transfers this summer, but they still managed to pick some interesting players, including Adou Thiero, Eric Dixon and Jake LaRavia. Most importantly, the Lakers were able to sign DeAndre Aiton on a two-year contract. Ayton's arrival provides Los Angeles with much-needed centers, while providing Luca Doncic with the kind of basket-running big guy he's thriving throughout his career. With Redick's new roster, deeper chemistry and more experience, Brownie feels comfortable with the Lakers' leap next season and he's totally looking forward to playing in the spring. When rumors of his father's loyalty spread, Brownie ignored all the noise and focused on his work. There is a lot to prove in the NBA, and Brownie James isn’t trying to make headlines, nor is he trying to make friends. He wants to win at the highest level and is willing to achieve this at all costs.
