ESPN: Rios transfers to Benfica by 30 million euros, Palmeiras wins 70%, and agent wins 10%

July 21 ESPN reported that Richard Rios is about to leave Palmeiras and join Benfica.

According to ESPN, the midfielder transferred to the Portuguese giants for about €30 million on Sunday. Colombian player Rios' contract with Palmeiras was originally scheduled to expire at the end of 2028, and he will miss the team's match against Atletico Minero in the Brazilian La Liga.

In this deal, Palmeiras will receive a 70% transfer fee. Flamengo (6.66%) and Guarani (13.34%) will also share the profit. Brokers holding 10% of Rios's economic interests will be paid directly from Benfica.

The negotiations were advanced thanks to the arrival of Benfica's executive director Rui Pedro Braz. He went to Sao Paulo in person to negotiate with Palmeiras and had reached a personal agreement with Rios' representative. In this way, the Portuguese team won the competition with Roma, who also tried to sign the midfielder.

The transfer fee is 2,250% higher than the fee paid by Palmeiras to Guarani to introduce Rios in mid-2023. At that time, the midfielder attracted attention because he tied Palmeiras in the Brazilian State Championship with a 0-0 draw. Soon after, in March 2023, Palmeiras announced the signing of Rios and paid 6 million reais (6.7 million reais at the current exchange rate) to acquire 60% of its economic interests. In January 2024, Palmeiras purchased an additional 10% interest for 1.5 million real (currently worth 1.6 million real). In total, Palmeiras spent 8.3 million reals to introduce Rios. Rios played 138 times and scored 11 goals during his time with Palmeiras.
